Why does mulch depth matter so much?

Depth is the single most common mistake homeowners make with a mulch job — both too much and too little cause problems.

  • Under 2 inches doesn’t block enough sunlight to suppress weed germination
  • Over 3–4 inches can suffocate roots, hold too much moisture against stems, and create habitat for pests and fungal issues
  • Mulch piled against tree trunks or plant stems (“volcano mulching”) traps moisture against the bark and can lead to rot
  • 2–3 inches is the sweet spot for most landscape beds — enough to suppress weeds and hold soil moisture without smothering the plants

How do I calculate cubic yards of mulch?

The formula is: (length ft × width ft × depth in inches) ÷ 324 = cubic yards.

That 324 comes from converting a depth in inches over a square-foot area into cubic yards — 1 cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, and dividing by 12 to convert inches to feet gets you to 324 as the combined conversion factor. Here’s how that plays out for common bed sizes at a 3-inch depth:

How do I measure an irregular-shaped bed?

Break irregular beds into rough rectangles or circles, calculate each separately, and add them together.

  • For a curved bed, measure the longest length and average width, then treat it as a rectangle
  • For a circular bed around a tree, use the formula πr² (3.14 × radius × radius) to get square footage
  • For an L-shaped or multi-section bed, split it into two or three simpler shapes and total the square footage before applying the depth calculation
  • When in doubt, measure a little generously — running short mid-job is more disruptive than having a small amount left over

What are the common mulch types used in Maryland?

Shredded hardwood, double-shredded hardwood, and dyed mulches (black, brown, red) are the most common options in this region.

  • Shredded hardwood — breaks down into soil over time, adds organic matter, widely available and cost-effective
  • Double-shredded hardwood — finer texture, knits together better on slopes, resists washout in heavy rain
  • Dyed mulch (black/brown/red) — colorfast look that holds color longer than natural hardwood, though the dye itself doesn’t affect plant health
  • Pine bark / pine fines — lower pH, sometimes preferred around acid-loving plants like azaleas and rhododendrons, both common in Maryland landscapes
  • Cedar mulch — natural insect-repellent properties, slower to break down than hardwood

The right type depends on the bed’s location, the plants in it, and how often the bed gets refreshed.

When should mulch be refreshed?

Once a year is standard for most Maryland landscape beds, typically in spring.

Mulch breaks down naturally as it decomposes into the soil, which is good for soil health but means depth shrinks over the year. A bed that started at 3 inches in spring may be down to an inch or less by the following spring. Refreshing annually — often just topping off rather than removing old mulch first — maintains the weed-suppression and moisture-retention benefits. Beds with heavy foot traffic or that wash out on slopes may need more frequent attention.

Does mulch actually help with weeds and moisture, or is that overstated?

It does help, but it’s not a substitute for proper bed prep.

Mulch works by blocking sunlight from reaching weed seeds in the soil, which stops most annual weeds from germinating, and by slowing evaporation from the soil surface, which reduces how often beds need watering. It doesn’t stop perennial weeds with established root systems, and it won’t fix drainage or soil quality problems on its own — those need to be addressed separately.
